As a small boy from Tennessee, S.W. McClaren (1869-1941) arrived in Milam County, Texas, with his parents in 1872. "The family settled on the Little River in the Marlow Community where the rich lands of the river bottom appealed to the elder McClaren and his son who followed the long furrow of the years and held many of its acres in his own name...", as written in The Cameron Daily Herald, September 16, 1941. In 1909, S.W. McClaren acquired his first tract of Little River farmland. Soon the "44" brand emblazoned his cattle and the history and tradition of 44 Farms began. Faith, backbreaking work, long hours, a powerful sense of pride, and a satisfaction of being a good steward of the land defined the life and goals of S.W. McClaren. The Cameron Daily Herald further described him as "friendly, always considerate, he was jovial and his smile was the sure evidence of a sunny heart." Nine children blessed S.W. McClaren and his wife, Jose. Four sons followed their father in agriculture and continued his stewardship of the "rich lands of the river bottom." Today, four generations later, two of the great—grandchildren of S.W. McClaren, Robert S. McClaren and Janet McClaren Salazar, are committed to honoring and enhancing the tradition of a successful farming and ranching operation—44 Farms. We invite you to please come by for a visit.
